Even in a traditional winemaking region such as Friuli Venezia Giulia, an interesting evolution is underway with the introduction of disease-resistant grape varieties, obtained by crossing the European grapevine (Vitis vinifera) with other species of grapevines, both American and Asian. These varieties demonstrate increased resilience to common fungal diseases, such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, which also aligns with Paolo Rodaro’s philosophy of research and experimentation, leading him to test their potential as well. The use of disease-resistant varieties, such as Sauvignon Nepis, Soreli and Cabernet Eidos, makes it possible to significantly reduce the need for phytosanitary treatments, proving particularly advantageous in areas with humid climates and fostering a more environmentally respectful approach. Therefore, this translates concretely into decreased soil tillage, fewer vineyard interventions, and greater attention to soil health.
